Over 12,000 new COVID-19 cases confirmed as mortality rate falls to single digit

VOV.VN - Vietnam has seen a continual fall in terms of the number of new daily COVID-19 infections, with 12,029 detected in 59 localities throughout the country, the Health Ministry said in its update on April 21.

The number of fresh COVID-19 infections in Hanoi dropped below the 1,000 mark over the past 24 hours, with 986 new cases recorded. This is the first time for months that the number of F0 cases recorded on a daily basis in the capital has fallen to less than 1,000.

New transmissions dropped by 1,242 cases compared to the previous day’s figure to bring the total caseload in the country to more than 10.53 million since the start of the pandemic.

Notably, the number of deaths has also decreased to single digit, with only 9 cases recorded on the same day, raising the nation's death toll since the pandemic started last year to 42,991, thereby accounting for 0.4% of the total caseload.

The total number of recovered patients in the country has now climbed to over 9 million after 8,693 COVID-19 cases made a full recovery from the disease.

The Ministry of Health announced that more than 210 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have now been administered nationwide.

One week after the start of a campaign to inoculate children from five to 12 against COVID-19, a total 88,820 children in the age group had received the first shot as of April 20.

The Health Ministry has to date allocated over 2.3 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for children to localities nationwide.

According to the Department of Preventive Medicine under the Health Ministry, there are approximately 11.8 million children from five to 12 years old eligible for COVID-19 vaccination. Of the figure, roughly 8.2 million have not caught COVID-19. The health sector aims to provide two shots to all eligible children by the end of the second quarter.
