One dead after fishing boat sinks in collision with cargo vessel
VOV.VN - One fisherman was killed after a Vietnamese fishing boat sank following a collision with a cargo vessel off the south-central coast of Vietnam on July 6, with the remaining 16 crew members rescued.
The accident occurred about 10 nautical miles southeast of Phu Hai port, off the coast of Lam Dong province, when fishing vessel BTh 98379 TS collided with the cargo ship Viet Thuan 11-07 while operating at sea.
The impact caused the fishing boat to sink rapidly. All 17 crew members fell into the water. Nearby fishing vessels responded quickly and rescued all crew members from the sea. However, one fisherman later died.
Fifteen surviving crew members, together with the victim’s body, were brought safely ashore. One crew member remained at the scene to assist authorities and monitor the sunken vessel.
Authorities were expected to receive the rescued fishermen and the vessels at Phu Hai port later the same day as part of the investigation into the cause of the collision.
An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the maritime incident.
In a separate maritime incident, an oil-carrying vessel caught fire on April 29 in Lien Huong commune, Lam Dong province, while anchored more than one nautical mile offshore.
The logistics vessel, which was used to transport fuel, had encountered a technical problem and anchored near the coast for repairs involving electric welding.
The vessel caught fire during the repair work. Three people were on board at the time. Two jumped into the sea and swam safely to shore, while the third was reported missing.
