Nghe An imports 10,000 vaccine doses to combat lumpy skin disease

VOV.VN - The Department of Livestock And Animal Health of Nghe An province received 10,000 doses of vaccine on March 24 with the aim of slowing the spread of viral lumpy skin disease (LSD) among local cattle.

As of March 25 the disease has impacted roughly 240 cows and buffaloes across 12 districts and towns throughout the province, with case numbers continuing to rise.

As a means of coping with the spread of LSD, the department has called on all farmers and traders not to sell, trade, or slaughter any cattle that shows symptoms of the illness. Instead they should report all suspected cases to the local authorities.

Ngo Duc Quynh, deputy director of the Department of Livestock and Animal Health, said that the disease transmission route typically occurred through insect bites, usually from mosquitoes, flies, and ticks. It could also happen by animal-to-animal transmission through pathogens, or shared drinking troughs, feeding, and milking areas.

Due to this, the control and destruction of intermediate hosts represents an important part of bringing the disease under control.

LSD is a double-stranded DNA virus that is a member of the capripoxvirus genus of Poxviridae and is not infectious to humans. It is believed that arthropod vectors, direct contact, contaminated feed or water, and iatrogenic means, such as the repeated use of needles on different animals, can cause the spread of the disease.

The incubation period is between four and 14-days post-infection, with the infection rate among cows and buffaloes being between 10% and 20%, with 1% to 5% going on to die.
