Ministry establishes airborne security force to prevent terrorism, illegal interference

VOV.VN - The Ministry of Public Security has officially set up an airborne security unit under the Immigration Department with the primary aim of preventing and combating any terrorist attacks and unlawful interference that may occur in order to ensure aviation security in the nation.

Upon addressing a ceremony held on November 15 to announce the Minister of Public Security’s decision on the establishment of the Airborne Security Desk, Deputy Minister Luong Tam Quang stated that the decision shows the increasing requirements which are necessary regarding airborne security protection.

The Immigration Department has co-ordinated with competent ministries and agencies as a way of fulfilling the tasks and reporting to the Ministry for approval back in early 2020.

Moving forward, the airborne security force will be in charge of preventing and combating terrorism, along with unlawful interference to ensure flight security of local airlines. It will therefore collect, synthesise, analyse, evaluate, and forecast the situation relating to acts that threatened the security and safety of Vietnamese civil aviation.

Furthermore, this force will offer advice to and propose guidelines and plans to the Immigration Department to proactively detect acts of terrorism.

It will also take responsibility of co-ordinating with the flight crew in handling unlawful interference or unexpected situations. It will be permitted to use weapons or technical means in order to neutralise illegal acts of interference against the aircraft, in line with the provisions of law, whilst also co-ordinating with airlines and functional forces both at home and abroad to tackle issues related to security on aircraft.

In special circumstances, the airborne security force may require the Immigration Department to suspend flights if there is the possibility of terrorist attacks or unlawful interference.

This force will co-ordinate alongside the Ministry of Public Security and the aviation industry to escort people who have been extradited or are serving prison sentences from abroad to the nation and vice versa, foreigners who have been expelled, deported Vietnamese people, and those wanted by Interpol.

Moving forward, Ministry of Public Security will be in charge of recruiting and training officers to deploy security forces in the air on flight routes.
