Maysak weakens into tropical depression in China, heavy rain persists in Quang Ninh
VOV.VN - Tropical Storm Maysak weakened into a tropical depression over Guangxi province in China at noon on July 5 and is expected to gradually dissipate, with no further direct impact on Vietnam.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the storm lost strength after moving further inland in southern Guangxi.
At 1 p.m., the center of the tropical depression was located at 22.9 degrees north latitude and 108.3 degrees east longitude, over Guangxi province. Maximum sustained winds near the center were at force 7 (50-61 kph), with gusts up to force 9, as the system moved north-northeast at around 10 kph.
Over the next 12 hours, the tropical depression is forecast to continue moving mainly northeast, weaken into a low-pressure area and gradually dissipate. The storm’s circulation, however, continues to bring heavy rain and strong winds to northern localities.
In the next six hours, multiple communes and wards in Lao Cai, Son La, Lai Chau and Quang Ninh still face risks of flash floods on small rivers and streams, as well as landslides on steep slopes.
Meteorologists warned of level-1 disaster risks linked to flash floods, landslides and land subsidence caused by heavy rain or runoff. These hazards pose serious risks to the environment and human life, while also disrupting traffic, damaging infrastructure and affecting production and socio-economic activities.
In Quang Ninh, heavy to very heavy rain and strong winds caused property damage in several localities.
As of 2 p.m. on July 5, heavy rain continued in Mong Cai, complicating recovery efforts. Full restoration of the local power grid had yet to be completed.
Local authorities in Quang Ninh are working to restore electricity, clear fallen trees and remove traffic obstructions to restore normal traffic flow.
