Maysak approaches mainland, with Quang Ninh and Hai Phong facing strongest impact
VOV.VN - The centre of Maysak, the first tropical storm this year, was located at 20.9 degrees north latitude and 107.9 degrees east longitude, over the waters off Quang Ninh province as 4 p.m. on July 4, according to Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Maximum winds near the storm’s centre reached force 8-9 (62-88 kph), with gusts of up to force 11 (103-117 kph). The storm was moving north at 10-15 kph.
The weather agency said Maysak was accelerating as it approached the northeastern coast, with Quang Ninh and Hai Phong seeing the strongest impact. The most dangerous period for strong winds runs until around 9-10 p.m., particularly between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. in coastal areas of Quang Ninh, Hai Phong and Hung Yen.
Mai Van Khiem, Director of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, said the storm was about 90 km from Mong Cai, with wind speeds and rainfall intensifying by the hour.
Under the storm’s circulation, the northern Gulf of Tonkin has seen very rough seas. Coastal areas in Quang Ninh and Hai Phong are recording gusts of force 10-11 (89-117 kph), while northeastern Vietnam faces heavy rain, with isolated areas likely to receive more than 400 mm.
Heavy rain will intensify from the evening of July 4 through the morning of July 5, with rainfall projected to reach several hundred millimetres. The risk of flooding in low-lying areas, along with flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas, remains high over the next one to two days.
By 4 a.m. on July 5, the storm is forecast to continue moving north at 10-15 kph, entering southern Guangxi and weakening into a tropical depression, with winds at force 7 (50-61 kph) and gusts of force 9 (75-88 kph).
By 4 p.m. on July 5, the tropical depression will continue moving north before weakening into a low-pressure area, with winds dropping below force 6 (below 49 kph).
A level-3 natural disaster risk warning remains in effect for the northern Gulf of Tonkin, including Bach Long Vi, Van Don, Co To and Cat Hai, as well as coastal waters from Quang Ninh to Hung Yen.
The weather agency urged residents in affected areas to closely monitor updates and take preventive measures to minimise damage to lives and property.
