International Vesak Day 2023 marked in New York

VOV.VN - A ceremony was solemnly held at the UN Headquarters on May 18 in New York to celebrate the International Vesak Day 2023.

Upon addressing the event, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, highlighted the humane thought of the Lord Buddha in not distinguishing social classes, which is the root of equality, freedom, and peace.

The Vietnamese diplomat pointed out that Lord Buddha's teachings are a system of scientific philosophy and can be used as a guideline to resolve difficulties occurring in the modern world, including war, poverty, epidemics, climate change, and environmental pollution, adding that these are also the goals and principles that the UN strives to pursue.

Ambassador Giang underlined the need to follow the Lord Buddha's example, overcome selfish interests towards the greater interests for all mankind, as well as protecting the natural environment in order to contribute to global peace and human happiness.

At the event, participants stressed that amid global uncertainties, the Lord Buddha's teachings on tolerance and compassion represent a source of comfort and strength for all nations to overcome their difficulties.

The great ideas set out by the Buddha are also the goals of the UN, which aims to increase understanding among peoples, promote peace, and ensure progress.
