The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Financial Corporation (IFC) on October 7 launched “Better Work”, a global project to improve working conditions for about 700,000 workers in 700 textile and garment enterprises in Ho Chi Minh City and its surrounding areas.

The programme will be conducted over five years supporting the government in improving labour standards, and working with companies to build a more effective process for abiding to them. The focus will be on increasing the efficiency of enterprises, widening their consumer services and thereby promoting overall economic development.

Vietnam is the first nation chosen for the pilot implementation of Better Work on the initiative of IFC and ILO.

The project is expected to be carried out in Jordan and Lesotho later.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Sachiko Yamamoto, Director of ILO Asia Pacific, stressed that the project connects government, labour organizations, employers, local enterprises and international companies to raise labour standards and competitiveness in the global supply chain.

The project receives sponsorship from the governments of Australia, Canada, Finland, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switerzland through another programme to develop the private sector.
