Hue collects DNA samples from 1,456 unidentified war martyrs' graves
VOV.VN - Authorities in the central city of Hue have begun collecting DNA samples from 1,456 unidentified war martyrs’ graves as part of a broader effort to determine the identities of fallen soldiers and provide long-awaited answers to their families.
The DNA sampling campaign was launched on June 16 at Hue Martyrs’ Cemetery by the city’s Steering Committee for the Search, Recovery and Identification of Martyrs’ Remains.
In this phase, experts are collecting biological samples, digitising information and transferring samples for laboratory analysis from 1,456 graves whose occupants have not yet been identified. The entire process is being conducted in accordance with technical procedures issued by the Ministry of National Defence to ensure accuracy in future DNA matching and identification efforts.
According to local authorities, Hue plans to complete DNA sampling for approximately 7,000 unidentified martyrs’ graves at 40 martyrs’ cemeteries across the city by July 27, 2027.
The plan forms part of Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to identify fallen soldiers whose remains have yet to be matched with personal records, helping address the wishes of families who have spent decades searching for information about their relatives.
Alongside DNA sampling, authorities are continuing to review historical records and verify information related to several locations suspected of containing mass graves.
One area currently under investigation is near the Western Gate of the former Hue Citadel in Phu Xuan Ward, where officials are conducting surveys and preparing technical equipment to support future search and recovery operations.
Nguyen Van Manh, vice chairman of the Hue People's Committee, said the city is accelerating its “500-day campaign” to search for, recover and identify martyrs' remains. He also called on residents and witnesses to provide information that could assist authorities in locating burial sites and identifying remains.
He stressed that media outreach has helped witnesses provide valuable information on suspected burial locations, enabling authorities to conduct field surveys and prepare plans for the recovery and reburial of martyrs at official cemeteries.
Dong Nai to collect DNA samples from unidentified war martyrs’ graves
VOV.VN - The southern province of Dong Nai has begun collecting DNA samples from 7,785 unidentified war martyrs’ graves across 12 martyrs’ cemeteries in an effort to help determine the identities of fallen soldiers whose remains have been unidentified for decades.
