Honeywell ignites teachers’ passion for STEM education

VOV.VN - Six Vietnamese middle school math and science teachers joined with over 200 counterparts from 25 countries on the journey of a lifetime in June to the Honeywell Educators Space Academy (HESA).

The HESA scholarship program is designed with the aim of inspiring teachers to encourage students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and careers.

Since its establishment in 2004, the program has inspired some 2,576 middle school math and science teachers from 56 countries, reaching nearly three million students.

As part of the training, teachers are given rigorous instruction focused on science and space exploration including astronaut-style exercises like high-performance jet simulation, scenario-based space mission, land and water survival training, and interactive flight dynamics programs.

“HESA is the best personal skills training program that I have experienced,” said Mai Thi Kim Tuyen from Thanh Cong Junior Secondary School in Hanoi, who recently participated in it.

She said she learned many new and useful teaching skills.

“This year saw the largest number of Vietnamese teachers ever register to participate, said Mai Trang Thanh,” president of Honeywell Indochina.

“As a result, teachers in Vietnam are now better equipped with new teaching techniques for math and science that hopefully will motivate their students to become future engineers, programmers, mathematicians and astronauts.”

To attend Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy, candidates must undergo a thorough application process. Qualified teachers are provided with grants, round-trip airfare, tuition, meals and accommodations paid for by Honeywell.

Honeywell Educators @ Space Academy is part of Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, which focuses on five areas of vital importance – Science & Math Education, Family Safety & Security, Housing & Shelter, Habitat & Conservation, and Humanitarian Relief.
