Heavy rain to trigger flooding on Northern Vietnam’s rivers
VOV.VN - Heavy rain is forecast to affect the northern mountainous and midland regions of Vietnam from the night of June 28 through June 30, raising the risk of flooding on rivers and streams as well as flash floods, landslides and localised inundation.
According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, water levels on the Thao River are fluctuating, while several rivers in Tuyen Quang, Lang Son and Thai Nguyen provinces are rising. Water levels on other rivers across Northern Vietnam remain below Alert Level 1.
Forecasters said prolonged rainfall over the three-day period is expected to rapidly increase runoff from upstream areas. Floods with water level rises of between two and four meters are forecast on small rivers and the upper reaches of major rivers in Northern Vietnam. Peak water levels on some smaller rivers could reach Alert Levels 1 and 2, the lower tiers of Vietnam's three-level flood warning system.
The greatest impacts are expected in the mountainous and midland provinces, where steep terrain, dense stream networks and already saturated soil from previous rainfall significantly increase the risk of flash floods, landslides along hillsides and embankments, and localised flooding in low-lying areas near rivers and streams.
The current natural disaster risk level for flooding has been set at Level 1 in the country’s five-level natural disaster risk system.
Flooding may disrupt transportation, particularly at low-water crossings and roads crossing streams. It could also damage aquaculture, agricultural production and other socio-economic activities in low-lying riverside communities.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting urged residents in northern mountainous and midland areas to closely monitor official weather forecasts and warnings, proactively identify high-risk locations, and take necessary measures to protect lives and property.
