Heavy rain brings relief to Northern Vietnam after intense heatwave
VOV.VN - Heavy rain and thunderstorms have brought much-needed relief to Northern Vietnam after several days of intense heat, with temperatures dropping significantly across the region.
Northern Vietnam and the North-central region had experienced one of the strongest heatwaves since the beginning of summer, with daytime temperatures commonly reaching 39–40°C. In the western parts of Thanh Hoa and Nghe An provinces, hot and dry foehn winds pushed temperatures above 41–42°C, making outdoor conditions even more oppressive.
The prolonged heat affected daily life, drove up electricity demand and increased the risk of forest fires and heat-related incidents.
Conditions began to change on the evening of June 25 as a low-pressure trough combined with upper-level wind convergence triggered widespread showers and thunderstorms across Northern Vietnam. By the morning of June 26, rain had spread across much of the Red River Delta, the northern midlands and mountainous provinces.
Several localities recorded moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts, causing temperatures to fall by 5–8°C compared with previous days.
According to the national meteorological agency, the rainfall marks the end of the recent heatwave in Northern Vietnam. Over the coming days, the region is expected to remain mostly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which could bring heavy rain, particularly during the late afternoon, evening and early morning. Daytime temperatures are forecast to range between 31 and 34°C.
Meanwhile, hot weather is expected to persist across the North-central and central regions despite a slight easing in intensity from June 26. Temperatures in areas from Thanh Hoa southward are forecast to range between 37 and 39°C, with some locations exceeding 40°C through the end of June.
Meteorologists also warned that thunderstorms following prolonged periods of extreme heat may be accompanied by lightning, hail, tornado-like whirlwinds and strong winds. Residents are advised to monitor weather forecasts closely and avoid taking shelter under large trees or near unsafe structures during thunderstorms.
