HCM City police bust VND3.5 trillion football betting rings

The municipal Investigation Police Agency said on July 7 that 21 individuals were charged with organising gambling and 64 others with gambling. All have been placed in pre-trial detention while the investigation continues.

The operation followed a month-long investigation launched in early June after criminal police uncovered an organised football betting network operating across multiple provinces during the World Cup.

On June 29, the Criminal Police Division of Ho Chi Minh City Police coordinated with Lam Dong provincial police and police forces in several other localities to carry out simultaneous operations and summon individuals linked to the case for questioning.

Investigators said the syndicates obtained master betting accounts from operators based in Cambodia before dividing them into multiple agent and member accounts for use by lower-level organisers and gamblers through the Bong88 betting platform.

From October 2025 until the rings were uncovered, total transactions were estimated at more than VND3.5 trillion (US$134 million). Police detained 150 individuals linked to the two gambling rings for further investigation.

Ho Chi Minh City Police urged the public not to engage in gambling or football betting in any form, warning that those who organise, participate in or facilitate such activities would be strictly handled in accordance with the law.

Residents were also encouraged to promptly report suspected gambling and football betting activities to the nearest police agency.

30 individuals prosecuted in Xoi Lac TV piracy and online gambling ring
