Hanoi hospitals cope with multiple disease outbreaks

VOV.VN - Doctors in hospitals throughout Hanoi are being overwhelmed by the volume of patients coming in suffering from dengue fever and adenovirus.

Data compiled by Hanoi’s Centre for Disease Control indicates that the capital recorded 1,420 new dengue fever cases over the past week to bring the total number of people infected this year to 8,199, with five people having died so far.

The total caseload stands 3.3 times higher compared to the same period from last year which saw 2,482 cases and no deaths, the centre said.

Infections have mainly been found in districts such as Dan Phuong, Thanh Oai, Phu Xuyen, Nam Tu Liem, and Dong Da. The number of fresh cases is currently on the rise in Hanoi due to seasonal changes and the fact that children have now returned to school.

Many people tend to confuse symptoms of influenza or dengue fever with COVID-19, meaning they may potentially be negligent with the condition.

According to doctors, if people have any symptoms such as a fever, a cough, or body aches, then they seek medical facilities to be examined and diagnosed to ensure that if they contract dengue fever, the doctor will monitor and treat them as soon as possible.

Furthermore, adenovirus infection in children has increased dramatically in the capital this year. This comes after the National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi recorded 3,938 children infected with adenovirus, around eight times higher compared to the same period in 2021.

Most notably, since the beginning of the year there have been six deaths of children infected with the virus.

Some districts have recorded a high number of cases such as Hoang Mai, Ha Dong, Nam Tu Liem, and Thanh Xuan.

As a means of coping with the outbreak, the Health Ministry and municipal health department have called on hospitals to keep beds and medicines on hand.

Currently, there is no vaccine against adenovirus. The most effective prevention methods consist of frequently washing your hands with soap and water, thoroughly disinfecting surrounding areas, letting children drink plenty of water, eating enough nutrients and getting enough sleep to strengthen a child's immune system, and giving children all necessary vaccinations.
