Hanoi deploys 2,460 more AI cameras to advance smart traffic management
VOV.VN - Hanoi is scheduled to put an additional 2,460 AI-powered surveillance cameras into operation on July 1 in an effort to support real-time traffic management, congestion forecasting and public security, marking another step toward Hanoi’s smart city ambitions.
The rollout marks the second phase of Hanoi Police's surveillance camera command centre upgrade project, following the deployment of 1,837 AI-enabled cameras in late 2025.
According to Hanoi Police, the newly deployed cameras include 1,107 cameras for detecting traffic violations; 960 cameras for vehicle counting and traffic flow monitoring; 112 panoramic cameras at major intersections; 251 public security surveillance cameras; and 30 speed enforcement cameras.
The project also includes 57 servers supporting operational software and 930 camera poles, providing the infrastructure needed for an integrated citywide traffic and security monitoring system.
Upon completion of the second phase, Hanoi will operate nearly 5,000 AI-powered cameras, creating one of Vietnam's largest intelligent surveillance networks.
The upgrade is not only about expanding the number of cameras but also enhancing AI-powered traffic management capabilities. The system supports ‘green-wave’ traffic coordination, adaptive traffic signal control, AI-based traffic congestion prediction and real-time traffic alerts.
Beyond transportation, the platform can also detect public disorder, unauthorised access to restricted areas, weapons, fire and smoke, as well as illegal dumping, strengthening public safety across the city.
Starting July 15, Hanoi will also activate 36 electronic traffic information boards, providing motorists with real-time traffic updates to help them choose alternative routes while assisting authorities in traffic management.
The first phase of the project became operational on December 13, 2025, with 1,837 AI cameras installed along 25 major roads and at 195 key intersections.
Over nearly six months of operation, the system detected more than 33,100 traffic violations and helped authorities handle 1,283 traffic incidents.
Meanwhile, Hanoi Traffic Police processed 171,504 traffic violations during the first half of 2026. Traffic accidents declined to 476 cases, down 111 cases from the same period last year, with no particularly serious traffic accidents reported.
City authorities expect the expanded AI camera network to improve traffic monitoring, law enforcement and public security while laying the groundwork for a smarter transportation system and a smarter city.
