Four million Vietnamese or about 5 percent of the country's population suffer from asthma, according to a report released by the Allergy, Asthma and Clinical Immunology Association (AACIA) in Hanoi, on May 3.
The report showed a yearly death toll of nearly 3,000 people as an alarming figure for the country and health professionals.
Speaking at the report release, Deputy Health Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen said the Health Ministry would raise treatment awareness among doctors and nurses as well as strengthening public education in a bid to combat the illness.
In 2007, the ministry will complete a strategic health plan on asthma prevention and provide further training on asthma treatment within Vietnamese medical colleges, she added.
