Five sets of Vietnamese martyr remains recovered in Cambodia
Search Team K91 under the Dong Thap provincial Military Command, following nearly one month of deployment in Cambodia's Prey Veng province, recovered the remains of five Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who laid down their lives in the country.
With assistance from local authorities and information provided by residents, the team verified and surveyed a site of nearly 2,000 sq.m, excavating more than 700 cu.m of earth. At a depth of 0.8-1.2 metres, the team discovered five sets of remains along with personal belongings, including uniform buttons, parachute hammocks and fabric fragments.
Based on recovered artefacts and eyewitness accounts, the team believed that the remains belong to five Vietnamese martyrs who died in 1972-1973. Their identities have not yet been confirmed. Samples have been taken for DNA analysis in line with identification procedures.
According to Team K91, it will continue to expand search operations in the coming days to repatriate more fallen soldiers. The unit is calling for information from organisations and individuals, particularly veterans, witnesses and residents, regarding burial sites of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers in the Cambodian provinces of Prey Veng and Pursat. Lieut. Col. Vo Thanh Dan, head of Team K91, said that during the 2024-2025 dry season, their operation focused on Pursat, Prey Veng and within Dong Thap province. As a result, 43 sets of remains have been unearthed, including 41 found in Pursat and Prey Veng provinces.
