Exhibition raises public awareness on plastic waste reduction

The Goethe Institute in Hanoi is hosting a photo exhibition to encourage the audience to get an overview of the current status of plastic waste in Vietnam, thereby inspiring them to take action for a better environment.

The “Plastic Tale of River” exhibition is being jointly organized by the Institute of Strategy, Policy on Natural Resources and Environment and the Embassy of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Vietnam in close cooperation with the World Wildlife Fund in Vietnam, the National Plastic Action Partnership, the Goethe Institute and other partners.

The exhibition presents artworks by photographers Truong Dai Duong and Nguyen Viet Hung and displays video clips and short films incorporating messages on plastic waste reduction.

During the exhibition, the Goethe Institute will coordinate with the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment to develop a virtual exhibition model on the Gathertown application to reach a more interested audience. It will also offer support to organize a series of side events that contribute to identifying practical solutions regarding policy, technical and communication aspects to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags and products.

The related side events include an EU knowledge-sharing workshop, “Promoting alternatives to single-use plastics for sustainable production and consumption in Vietnam”, and a technical workshop of the Plastic and Health Action Partnership titled “Single use plastic and its impact on health.”

With more than 20 years of experience in the profession, Truong Dai Duong is one of the famous photographers with his own unique portrait photography.

The works of photographer Truong Dai Duong never fail to fascinate the audience due to the soul and love embedded in each frame. The light and color of each set of photos taken by Duong always have their own nuances.

“I want every message to be delivered to the audience through authentic pictures and their own story. Beautiful moments and clear messages will have a strong impact. We just need to make efforts in the smallest ways, just like the sprinkle of spring rain still penetrates the damp soil, and the trees sprout and thrive,” he said.

Photographer Nguyen Viet Hung has been to so many islands, even on uninhabited coasts, and he still easily picks up household plastic waste with packages printed in many languages of different countries.

“We may come from many different countries and places but we only have one planet, one ocean, and one mutual mission. It is the mission to reduce plastic waste in the ocean. My camera has captured so many areas full of trash,” he shared.

“The people and the rivers have been buckling under the pressure of trash. Once the photos were shared, a lot of places were cleaned up. My friends sent me pictures of those places; the only difference was that there was no trash left. I realized one thing: Only action can make a change.”
