Education and skills development highlighted in Vietnam-UK cooperation
VOV.VN - Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son has held a bilateral meeting with Baroness Jacqui Smith, the UK Minister for Skills at the Department for Education within the framework of the official visit to the United Kingdom by Party General Secretary To Lam, his delegation.
The meeting discussed major orientations to strengthen educational, training, and skills development partnerships between the two countries. The two sides agreed to promote cooperation in teacher training and education policy development, under which the UK will assist Vietnam in teacher training, policymaking to make English the second language, and integrating international education programs into Vietnam’s national education system.
Both sides also consented to enhance cooperation between higher education, vocational, and secondary education institutions, and to expand joint training programs, student and faculty exchanges, and mutual credit recognition.
Minister Nguyen Kim Son and Minister Jacqui Smith signed a Letter of Intent and agreed to continue working toward the renewal of the existing Memorandum of Understanding on educational cooperation between the two ministries in the near future.
The two sides concurred on intensifying academic exchanges and encouraging the establishment of new joint programs, while expanding cooperation among universities, vocational institutions, and secondary schools through exchanges of lecturers, researchers, and students, particularly in such areas as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and aerospace.
The UK affirmed its continued support for Vietnam in advancing English teaching and learning, with the goal of making English the second language in Vietnamese schools by 2035, and in developing human resources through cooperation among educational organizations, training institutions, and schools in both countries. Vietnam welcomed the establishment and effective operation of UK educational institutions in the country and encouraged the expansion of transnational education cooperation, aiming to make Vietnam an emerging international education hub.
Vietnam also acknowledged the important contributions of the British Council to bilateral ties, particularly in cultural exchange and education. Both sides consented to cooperate to enable the British Council to continue its contributions in accordance with Vietnamese law.
The two countries agreed to expedite discussions toward signing a new Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation to provide a legal framework for expanding and effectively carrying out upcoming joint programs.
The bilateral meeting between Minister Nguyen Kim Son and Minister Jacqui Smith marked an important step forward in consolidating and expanding Vietnam-UK educational cooperation as a contribution to the strengthening of overall relations between the two nations.
The documents reached at the meeting open up practical cooperation opportunities in teacher training, skills development, and English teaching and learning, moving toward the goal of building a high-quality workforce to meet Vietnam’s development and international integration needs.
