Dengue fever cases in Hanoi exceed warning level

VOV.VN - The number of dengue fever cases detected in the capital have so far exceeded the warning level with more than 10,700 patients recorded so far this year, including 12 fatalities, according to details given by the capital’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Hanoi).

In line with this, patient numbers stand at 3.5 times higher compared to the same period from 2021.

So far this year Hanoi has recorded roughly 871 dengue outbreaks, of which 143 have remained active.

Tran Thi Nhi Ha, director of Hanoi Health Department, said that dengue fever is set to become increasingly complicated with a rise in the number of cases and deaths at the peak of the annual epidemic season in November and December.

She noted that the capital is witnessing the largest increase in dengue fever cases in the country, with the weekly number of infections rising from between 500 and 700 per week in September to 1,200 between 1,300 per week in early November.

According to Ha, the favourable weather for disease-carrying mosquitos have been one of the main factors in the spread of the virus, with this year also being part of the five-year cycle in which significant dengue outbreaks have been recorded.

As a means of minimising the outbreak, a score of measures will be taken such as killing larvae and spraying chemicals to kill mosquitoes in high-risk areas or areas that have dengue fever patients. Local authorities must therefore set up teams as a means of monitoring the situation.

Most notably, there is no vaccine for dengue fever. According to doctors, people who suffer from mild dengue fever can be monitored and treated as outpatients whilst at home.
