Da Nang seeks continued WWF partnership for biodiversity conservation

VOV.VN - Da Nang hopes that the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) will continue to collaborate on biodiversity conservation programmes and projects in the city for 2025–2030, with a vision toward 2050.

Vice Chairwoman of the Da Nang People’s Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi made the statement during her reception for Martin Kabaluapa Kapinga, Chief of Country Offices Division, WWF International, on November 12.

Thi appreciated WWF’s past support, including funding, technical assistance, and capacity building for city departments and local authorities in forest management, biodiversity protection, wildlife conservation, and community development.

WWF’s assistance has also strengthened technical equipment, law dissemination, and enforcement of conservation regulations, she said.

WWF is currently working with the city’s Department of Agriculture and Environment on a forest restoration and livelihood development project in former Quang Nam province (now part of Da Nang), with funding of over US$8.1 million, and plans to support additional programmes in Da Nang.

Thi requested WWF’s continued cooperation in developing a biodiversity action strategy and plan, financial mechanisms for conservation, management of natural heritage and wetlands, community education, forest restoration, emission reduction and carbon credit development, application of science, technology and digital transformation, and training, research, and data sharing on conservation.

“Regarding the signing of the five-year cooperation agreement, we have assigned the leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the Department of Finance, and the Department of Foreign Affairs, along with relevant agencies and local authorities, to discuss and negotiate, aiming for the agreement to be signed at an appropriate time,” she said.

On this occasion, WWF donated US$40,000 to help local residents recover from recent severe floods.
