COVID-19: Vietnam records over 4,500 new cases over 24 hours

VOV.VN - Vietnam has confirmed 4,513 coronavirus cases during the past 24 hours till 06.00pm on October 9, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in its coronavirus update.

Of the new infections, 2,173 cases were detected in the community through test screening or random testing, a returnee from overseas tested positive upon arrival, and the rest were documented in quarantine or lockdown areas. 

Ho Chi Minh City, the country’s largest coronavirus hotspot, registered 1,662 new cases, down by 553 cases compared to the previous day.

It was followed by Binh Duong with 820 cases, Dong Nai 575, An Giang 308, Soc Trang 192, Binh Thuan 122, and An Giang 113, all in the south.  

Notably, Dak Lak province in the Central Highlands reported 85 new cases, topping central localities.  

Ha Nam remains the hotspot in the northern region, detecting 24 new cases, raising its tally of infections to nearly 600.

As of 06.00pm on October 9, Vietnam has recorded 836,134 coronavirus cases since the start of the outbreak in January 2020, and 831,523 locally acquired infections following the resurgence of the virus in late April 2021.

Of the total, 760,801 patients have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease, including 1,319 recoveries announced on October 9. 

The MoH has also confirmed 105 COVID-19 deaths during the past 24 hours, with HCM City and Binh Duong reporting 74 and 18 fatalities respectively.

The October 9 figure has raised the COVID-19 death toll in Vietnam to 20,442, making up 2.4% of the total number of infections. 

More than 55.6 million vaccine doses have been administered nationwide, with 14.2 million people getting their second shot.
