COVID-19: Single-day tally drops by 1,467 to reach 5,490

VOV.VN - The Health Ministry confirmed the detection of 5,490 new COVID-19 cases on October 2, thereby pushing the total during the latest wave’s to 798,626 infections.

The epicentre of Ho Chi Minh City continued to the lead the daily tally with 2,723 cases, followed by Binh Duong with 1,517 cases. On average, the country has recorded 8,065 cases daily over the past week.

With 164 fatalities announced on October 2, the pandemic’s death toll rose to 19,601. In addition, the total number of recoveries also increased to 664,938 following 28,857 discharges being confirmed on the same day.

Hanoi reported the discovery of 14 new community cases, with the majority linked to a fresh outbreak detected at the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital a few days ago.

According Hanoi Centre for Disease Control (CDC), the health sector has yet to identify the source of infection, with the possibility that the outbreak in the hospital has passed many infection cycles, thereby driving the number of infections up in the near future.

Since the start of the pandemic the nation has recorded 803,202 cases.

As of the end of October 1, over 43.6 million people have now been vaccinated with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines, with more than 10.1 million people already receiving two full shots.

Regarding the continued vaccination roll out, Deputy Health Minister Do Xuan Tuyen said distribution priority for the 54 million COVID-19 vaccine doses set to arrive this month will be given to southern localities.

Ahead in the October batch, the nation will be given approximately 110 million vaccine doses in total.

Deputy Minister Tuyen added that 12 southern Vietnam localities, including Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Can Tho, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Hau Giang, Dong Thap, An Giang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, and Vinh Long, are close to bringing the pandemic under control, but there are still risks of new outbreaks.

Around 2.7 million people in these localities have now received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot and roughly 690,000 people have now been fully vaccinated, he added.
