COVID-19: new record set as daily caseload rises surpasses 1,600 mark

VOV.VN - Vietnam has confirmed an additional 591 coronavirus cases during the past six hours, raising its daily count to 1,625, a record high figure, the Ministry of Health (MoH) said in its 06.00pm COVID-19 update on July 9.

About 590 locally transmitted cases were detected in 17 cities and provinces nationwide, while one imported case was reported in Dong Thap.

Most of the cases were documented in southern Vietnam, with Ho Chi Minh City taking the lead. The southern metropolis, the country’s largest coronavirus hotspot, detected 400 cases, followed by Long An (40), Tien Giang (34), Dong Thap (32), Binh Duong (7), Can Tho (6), Hau Giang (4), Soc Trang (2), and Binh Phuoc (1).

Elsewhere, 25 new cases were logged in Khanh Hoa, 22 in Phu Yen, eight in Hung Yen, five in Bac Ninh, and one each in Dak Nong, Da Nang, Nghe An, and Bac Giang.

Data from the MoH show Vietnam has recorded 1,625 new cases from 06.00pm on July 8 to 06.00pm on July 9. HCM City alone registered 1,229 locally transmitted cases, making three fourths of the total.

The city, the busiest and most populous in Vietnam, has imposed two-week social distancing with tighter prevention measures as of 00.00 on July 9, aiming to slow the spread of the virus.

Local residents were required to stay indoors and were only allowed to go out for food or other necessities and for emergency cases. Those who fail to observe the order would be subject to hefty fines.

The city has reinstated health quarantine control at 157 checkpoints and refused to issue a travel document to any individual in order to keep the virus at bay.

It has committed to supplying sufficient commodities for daily consumption and warned people not to stockpile food or gather in large crowds at supermarkets.

Although largest wholesale markets and wet markets were temporarily suspended, supermarkets and convenience stores have been provided with an abundant supply of commodities.

Meanwhile, the MoH has dispatched a contingent of health professionals to HCM City to assist it with contact tracing, COVID-19 sampling and testing.

Overall, Vietnam has documented 22,533 positive cases following the resurgence of the virus on April 27, and 26,010 cases since the virus attacked in January 2020.

As many as 8,984 patients have recovered from the disease, and 110 patients have died of COVID-19 and other underlying illnesses.
