COVID-19: Nearly 11,000 new cases recorded, mostly in HCM City, Binh Duong

VOV.VN - Vietnam has confirmed an additional 10,811 coronavirus infections during the past 24 hours, with more than two thirds recorded in Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong, the country’s two largest coronavirus hotspots.

According to a coronavirus update released by the Ministry of Health (MoH) at 06.00pm, up to 6,780 cases were detected in the community through random testing or test screening. 14 people tested positive upon returning from overseas, and the rest were diagnosed in quarantine or lockdown areas.

HCM City, the largest coronavirus hotspot, led all COVID hit localities in infection number, registering 4,672. Meanwhile, its neighbouring province of Binh Duong, an industrial complex hub, reported 3,638 new cases.

Other southern localities documenting large numbers of new cases include Dong Nai 799, Long An 393, Dong Thap 162 Tay Ninh 105, Tien Giang 93, Can Tho 72, and Ba Ria – Vung Tau 64.

In the central region, Da Nang and Khanh Hoa led regional localities, reporting 203 and 153 new cases respectively.

The past 24 hours saw Hanoi capital which is implementing extended social distancing measures record 66 more cases.

More infections were also registered in dozens of other localities from north to south, mostly in the southern and central regions.

As of 06.pm on August 24 Vietnam has documented 369,267 coronavirus cases, ranking 66th out of 222 countries and territories worldwide in infection numbers.

Of the total, 365,152 locally acquired infections have been detected since the virus recurred nearly four months ago.

HCM City remains the hardest hit locality, reporting 184,472 infections, followed by Binh Duong 77,053, Long An 18,586, and Dong Nai 19,110.

As many as 162,279 patients have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the disease, including 7,663 recoveries announced on August 24.

The MoH also recorded 348 more deaths in 14 localities on August 24, with HCM City and Binh Duong registering 292 and 35 fatalities respectively.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Vietnam has risen to 9,014, accounting for 2.4% of the total number of cases and equivalent to the average COVID-19 death rate in the world.
