COVID-19: Five new cases in Da Nang take national tally to 1,014

VOV.VN - Vietnam has confirmed five more community acquired coronavirus cases during the past 12 hours, bringing the country’s tally of infections to 1,014, while the death toll remains at 25.

All the five cases live in Da Nang city, the epicenter of the country’s largest coronavirus outbreak, the Ministry of Health said in its August 22 update at 18.00hrs.

Of the cases, three are female traders at two wet market in Thanh Khe district. Meanwhile, a 60-year-old man, a member of the Lau Den market management board in Thanh Khe district, tested positive for the virus.

Another man, 52, in Lien Chieu district, tested positive after having contact with a COVID-19 patient.

The five patients are being quarantined at Da Nang’s Hoa Vang field hospital for observation and treatment.

The same day, 16 COVID-19 patients were discharged from Hoa Vang field hospital after making a full recovery from the disease. One of them successfully gave birth to a baby on August 15.

As of 18.00hrs August 22, Vietnam has registered 672 locally transmitted cases, including 532 cases tied to the Da Nang outbreak that occurred in late July. The remaining 342 cases were infected with the virus before they returned to Vietnam.

The new outbreak has spread to 15 cities and provinces since the SARS-CoV-2 virus recurred in Da Nang on July 25. Da Nang is the hardest hit locality, recording more than 300 cases, followed by Quang Nam, Hanoi, Hai Duong and Ho Chi Minh City.

Of the 1,014 cases Vietnam has confirmed since January this year, 563 cases have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery. The remaining cases are receiving treatment at medical facilities across the country with 138 cases having tested negative at least once.

The death toll caused by the disease remains unchanged at 25. Most of the fatalities were elderly people who suffered from serious illnesses such as end-stage kidney cancer, severe pneumonia, diabetes and multi-organ failure.
