Cold spell beats the heat, brings rain to regions

VOV.VN - A cold spell is spreading across the northern and central regions of Vietnam, helping to beat the extreme heat wave that has hit the regions for the past few days.

The cold spell struck northern border localities on May 7 evening and then spread across the midland and lowland localities in the morning.

The cold air wave is bringing rain, helping to reduce daytime temperatures by 20℃ on average to 21-24℃ in the lowland region and below 21℃ in the highland region.

Earlier, the northern and central regions endured an extreme heatwave, with daytime temperatures rising to nearly 40℃.

Several localities such as Thanh Hoa and Nghe An even recorded daytime temperatures exceeding the 40℃ mark.

Notably, 44.2℃ was recorded at the weather station in Tuong Duong district of Nghe An province, hitting all-time high in Vietnam.

The whole country’s temperature in May is expected to be 0.5-1℃ higher than the average of previous years The northern and central regions are likely to experience more extreme heatwaves but fewer storms due to the impact of El Nino.
