Children's HeartLink recognises first Vietnamese pediatric cardiology centre

This represents the first children's cardiology centre in the nation to be awarded this certificate by Children's HeartLink.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, director of Children's Hospital No 1, revealed that since 2008, through the support of Children's HeratLink and other organisations, the hospital’s doctors, nurses, and technicians have been dispatched to undergo training in many domestic and foreign hospitals.

Thanks to these efforts, the hospital boasts a team of skilled and qualified cardiologists who are capable of providing treatment on a range of complex cardiovascular diseases, especially on extremely preterm infants.

Over the past 15 years, the hospital has performed more than 5,100 open-heart surgeries and more than 7,100 interventional cardiac catheterizations, with a survival rate of 98%. As a result, the hospital mortality rate significantly reduced from 4.9% in 2007 to 0.4% in 2021.

Aside from significantly improving the mortality rate of congenital heart disease, the hospital has provided relevant training and transferred expertise in interventional cardiac catheterization and heart surgery to localities and some countries like India, Japan, Singapore, China, and Malaysia.

“By being recognized as an excellent cardiology center, we are committed to striving to become the pediatric cardiology center of Southeast Asia in the coming time,” Dr. Hung said.

Children's HeartLink is a non-profit organisation that works to improve the quality of care for children suffering from congenital heart disease in various regions of the world.

At present, there are six excellent pediatric cardiology centres in Brazil, China, India, Bangladesh, and Malaysia that have been recognised by Children's HeartLink.

The cardiovascular center under the Children's Hospital No 1 is the seventh excellent centre in this list.
