During the course of the meeting, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long briefed cabinet members on the country’s current COVID-19 situation. He provided details of large-scale testing and vaccinations for citizens, along with proposals and recommendations put forward by the Ministry of Health on import, production, vaccination, and resource mobilization to carry out these activities.

As of midday on May 17 the nation has recorded a total of 4,242 active COVID-19 cases, including 1,078 new cases documented since the latest outbreak on April 27. The number of deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic now stands at 37.

At present, numerous sectors and localities are seriously and drastically implementing directions and regulations relating to pandemic prevention and control. As such pandemic-hit localities have already imposed social distancing measures, put affected areas into lockdown at different levels, whilst also tracing and testing high-risk individuals.

Furthermore, ministries, sectors, and localities have also increased their support for localities facing numerous outbreaks. As a result, the pandemic situation has been brought under control in most pandemic-hit localities.

However, the situation still remains unpredictable, especially in relation to outbreaks in Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces where many industrial parks are located and many workers have been infected with the virus, Minister Long said.

During the course of the meeting, PM Chinh asked participants to hold in-depth discussions on pandemic prevention and control activities in the past and present. This should be done in order to draw lessons and give a proper assessment of the situation to devise effective solutions for which can be implemented in the near future.

The Government leader emphasized the need to focus on issues such as leadership in pandemic containment, implementation of the directives of the Secretariat, the President, the Government, the PM, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control, and the Ministry of Health. This is along with the involvement of relevant agencies in pandemic prevention and control.

It is therefore necessary to consider the effectiveness and results of pandemic response measures, the country’s ability to cope with unexpected situations, and efforts to further step up communication on pandemic containment efforts, he added.
