8 killed, 13 injured in Vietnam van crash

VOV.VN - At least eight people were killed and 13 others were injured in a van collision happening in central Vietnam early on February 14.

The accident happened at 03:55 at a crossroad leading to Tam Hiep port of Nui Thanh District, Quang Nam province, according to a local official.

A van with many people on board collided with a container truck at the cross road, confirmed Nguyen Hong Quang, deputy head of the Quang Nam provincial administration.

The van was transporting people from Quang Ngai province to Hue city for medical examination, said Quang.

The van turned turtle, with six people being killed at the scene, while two passengers who were among the injured died on the way to hospital, said the official.

Other injured passengers were immediately brought to a nearby hospital for emergency examination and treatment, he said.

Initial reports show the 16-seater van was carrying a total of 21 people when the accident happened. In addition, it was travelling at a speed of 69kph, while vehicles are allowed to do 60kph at maximum at the crossroad.

Hearing about the news, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent condolences to the bereaved and asked relevant agencies to deal with the consequences of the accident. He also asked the designated agencies to identify the cause, and impose stiff punishment on lawbreakers.  

The police launched investigations into the cause of the accident.
