250kg wartime bomb safely destroyed after discovery at school site

VOV.VN - Military engineers from the Nghe An Provincial Military Command have successfully relocated and destroyed a 250kg MK82 general-purpose bomb with an intact fuse that was discovered during the construction of a primary school in central Vietnam.

The bomb was safely detonated on June 24 at a designated disposal site in Do Luong commune, following two days of coordinated safety operations conducted by local military authorities and explosive ordnance disposal specialists.

Earlier, at around 12:30 p.m. on June 22, construction workers excavating the foundation for Luu Son Primary School uncovered a suspicious object buried underground and immediately reported the finding to local authorities.

Following an on-site inspection, military officials identified the object as an MK82 bomb measuring approximately 1.55m in length and 27.5cm in diameter, with an estimated weight of 250kg. The bomb was located about 2.5m below the ground surface.

Authorities noted that the device still contained an intact fuse, posing a significant safety risk if subjected to impact or disturbance.

According to local military officials, the bomb was a remnant of past conflicts and is the largest wartime explosive ever discovered in the area.

Upon confirmation, local authorities established a security perimeter around the site, installed warning signs, deployed guards around the clock, and evacuated residents and livestock from the danger zone.

Military engineers later neutralised the fuse and transported the bomb to a dedicated demolition area. The disposal operation was completed successfully on June 24, ensuring absolute safety for local residents and property.

Vietnam continues to deal with unexploded ordnance left over from past wars, particularly in central provinces, where authorities regularly conduct clearance and disposal operations to protect communities and support socio-economic development.
