Vietnam voices support for peace, reconciliation process in Colombia

VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, voiced the country’s support for the ongoing peace, security, national reconciliation, reunification, and development process in Colombia, as well as for the role of the UN Verification Mission.

In his address at a session of the UN Security Council on October 14 held to discuss the situation in the South American country and activities of the UN Verification Mission, the diplomat hailed the political, economic, and social strides being made in the South American nation.

He therefore asked all relevant parties to continue participating in dialogue activies in a constructive spirit as a means of dealing with challenges and differences during the peace process, especially via the mechanisms set up under the peace agreement.

Ambassador Quy also demanded all concerned parties take necessary measures and effectively use mechanisms aimed at guaranteeing security in the protection of civilians, particularly women and children.

During the course of the event, speakers stated that the peace process in Colombia have achieved many important milestones in terms of politics, security, and economy. They also voiced concern regarding the continued attacks on and violence against veterans, blacks, women, and indigenous people, particularly in rural areas.

They therefore used the platform to urge the Colombian Government to keep promoting the political process, protect vulnerable groups, and carry out election-related initiatives aimed at organising democratic and peaceful elections in 2022.

Members of the Security Council also highlighted recent advances made in the implementation of the peace agreement in Colombia, whilst expressing grave concerns over violent actions and killings of civilians, especially former soldiers.

They underlined the necessity of intensifying measures to prevent activities of illegal armed groups and ensure safety for vulnerable groups during the reintegration process. As a result, they called on the Colombian Government to join relevant parties to continue promoting socio-economic development policies which aim to assist people.

Participants also voiced support for activities taken by the UN Verification Mission and the Colombian Government during the peace and national reconciliation process.
