Vietnam urges US to end hostile policy and unilateral embargo against Cuba

VOV.VN - The nation continue to pay close attention to issues in Cuba and believes that Cuba will overcome the current socio-economic difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and embargo consequences placed upon it.

Le Thi Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, made the statement on July 16 in response to a reporter's question about Vietnamese comments on the disorderly situation in Cuba on July 11.

"We learned that on July 11 there were some disorderly protests in Cuba, but the situation stabilized soon after. Vietnam always cares and believes that Cuba will overcome the current socio-economic difficulties caused by the pandemic and embargo consequences, successfully implemented the process of updating the socio-economic model, and bringing into play the great achievements in education, health and science and technology,” Hang said.

The country always bears in mind the solidarity and precious support given by Cuba in the past and during difficult times, meaning that Vietnam will always stand side by side to support the Cuban people within its capacity.

The nation therefore calls on the United States to end its hostile policy and unilateral economic and financial embargo against Cuba. The embargo has lasted for nearly 60 years and has been tightened in recent times, only serving to aggravate the socio-economic difficulties faced by the Cuban people.

The spokesperson went on to say that the US must take concrete steps toward normalization of relations with the Caribbean nation, for the benefit of both nations' people, thereby contributing to peace, stability, and development in the region and the wider world.
