Vietnam supports continued contributions to peacekeeping operations in South Sudan

VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, has affirmed the nation’s readiness to continue contributing to the activities of the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) whilst also promoting the participation of women in the Mission.

Upon addressing a regular meeting held by the UN Security Council on June 21 to discuss the situation in South Sudan and the UNMISS’s  activities in the Northeast African nation, the Vietnamese diplomat noted his appreciation for the positive developments in South Sudan. Indeed, this year will see South Sudan celebrate its 10th anniversary of independence.

The international community should therefore acknowledge these developments and seek continue to encourage stakeholders in South Sudan to take effective measures aimed at addressing violence between communities, including resolving the root causes of problems through dialogue and building trust, he added.

The Ambassador highly appreciates the role of the UNMISS, neighbouring countries, and regional organisations in promoting the peace and development process in South Sudan. He also affirmed that Vietnam will continue to make active contributions to the UNMISS' ongoing operations and propel the participation of women in the Mission moving forward.

He also used the event to call on the Government of South Sudan and all concerned parties to closely co-operate in the implementation of relevant UNSC  resolutions on South Sudan, including Resolution 2577, which aims to lift the arms embargo placed on the African country.

With regard to the situation in South Sudan, rapporteurs stated that there have been some positive developments in the situation since the beginning of the year, in which the long-term ceasefire agreement continues to be complied with and a transitional parliament has since been established.

However, rapporteurs believe that the overall implementation progress of the 2018 Peace Agreement remains slow and have expressed their concern about the seriousness of the economic and humanitarian crisis in the country, especially with regard to situation of food insecurity and growing community violence.

Nicholas Haysom, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for South Sudan and Head of the UNMISS, affirmed that the transitional government of South Sudan will continue to ensure co-operation with UNMISS and the implementation of relevant UNSC resolutions to help the Northeast African nation.
