Vietnam reaffirms commitment to promoting and protecting human rights

VOV.VN - Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and other international organizations in Geneva has reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to promoting human rights at the 58th regular session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on February 26.

Congratulating the newly elected President of the UN Human Rights Council, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung emphasized Vietnam’s strong cooperation. He noted that Vietnam completed its fourth cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in September 2024 and is now devising a master plan to implement the accepted recommendations. In 2025, Vietnam will conduct dialogues on its national reports regarding the implementation of key international human rights treaties, including the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

Despite various challenges, the Vietnamese economy grew by over 7% in 2024, while the multidimensional poverty rate dropped to 1.9%. Health insurance coverage expanded, and education quality improved nationwide. Looking ahead, Vietnam aims for an economic growth rate exceeding 8% in 2025, setting the stage for double-digit growth from 2026 onward and boosting better conditions for human rights advancement. The Vietnamese diplomat also reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to climate change response, with a target of net-zero emissions by 2050 and a focus on ensuring a just energy transition.

At the 56th session of the UN Human Rights Council in 2024, Vietnam, together with Bangladesh and the Philippines, introduced an annual resolution on human rights and climate change, highlighting the importance of a just transition.

Underscoring Vietnam’s proactive role in promoting and protecting human rights, Ambassador Mai Phan Dung announced the country’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for the 2026–2028 term, with strong support from ASEAN member states. He affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to cooperate with partners in advancing a comprehensive, constructive human rights agenda based on dialogue and cooperation.
