Vietnam ready to step up cooperation with UN on peacekeeping

VOV.VN - Nguyen Phuong Tra, deputy permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, has affirmed the nation’s readiness to augment co-operation with the UN on various international peacekeeping missions.

Upon addressing an annual meeting of the UN Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations, known as C-34 held on February 14, Tra said the country pays great attention to the participation in peacekeeping missions, especially to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers. This is along with striving to secure resources and enhancing the role of regional organisations such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and that of women.

The country is one of the four training centres set up for peacekeepers in Southeast Asia and stands ready to enhance collaboration in this field.

During the meeting, attended by Abdulla Shahid, president of the General Assembly, Alexandre Zouev, assistant secretary-general for Rule of Law and Security Institutions of the Department for Peace Operations, and representatives of nearly 60 countries, participants discussed the safety and security of peacekeepers. They also brought up other topics such as the promotion of the participation of women in the peace processes, along with securing finance for peacekeeping operations.

Furthermore, they underlined the role of the committee in this activity, with some suggesting that the technological application should be intensified in peacekeeping operations, whilst co-operation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organisations should be ramped up to resolve the root causes of the conflicts.

The two above said officials said the C-34 will speed up the realization of Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) Plus plan in 2021 to 2023 on seven priority areas.

C-34 is a specialised committee of the UN General Assembly, which holds meetings in February and March every year in order to consult and compile reports on issues related to peacekeeping before submitting them to the UN General Assembly.
