Vietnam promotes consensus on UN Pension Fund management
VOV.VN - After nearly three months of discussion and negotiation on documents, the Fifth Committee which is the Committee of the General Assembly with responsibilities for administration and budgetary matters held a plenary session on December 24 and adopted more than 20 resolutions on organisational, administrative, and budgetary issues of UN agencies and member countries' contributions to the organisation's 2025 budget.
During the course of the session, the draft Resolution on the UN Pension Fund negotiated and co-ordinated by Vietnam, was also approved by consensus.
The resolution acknowledges the positive results recorded in operating the UN Pension Fund over the past year with a total value of nearly US$100 billion and 150,000 pensioners. It also decided on the personnel structure and budget of the Fund Secretariat and set out the Fund's operational direction ahead for 2025, including measures aimed at improving and facilitating pension procedures, diversifying investment forms, as well as increasing investment in emerging markets and developing countries in a bid to increase the overall value of the Fund in the coming time.
During the negotiation process, faced with diverse viewpoints and proposals put forward by many countries, as a co-ordinating country, Vietnam made efforts to find solutions which seek to narrow differences, promote compromise, and build a general consensus on the content of the draft Resolution, thereby helping this important Resolution to receive plenty of support from all countries.
The chairman of the fifth Committee and member countries welcomed and highly appreciated the nation’s role and practical contributions to the process of drafting the Resolution. This result continues to affirm its strong commitment to being an active, trustworthy, and responsible member, as well as its ability to co-ordinate and lead at UN forums.
At a plenary session held later the same day, the UN General Assembly unanimously adopted the Resolution.
