Vietnam, New Zealand deepen strategic partnership on 50th anniversary of ties

VOV.VN - Marking 50 years of diplomatic ties, Vietnam and New Zealand are expanding cooperation in trade, climate change adaptation, and education, setting the stage for a stronger strategic partnership.

National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon in Hanoi on February 27 during the latter’s official visit to Vietnam and attendance at the second ASEAN Future Forum."

Welcoming PM Christopher Luxon and his delegation, Chairman Man underlined the significance of this visit, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations (1975–2025).

PM Luxon congratulated Vietnam on its remarkable socio-economic achievements, recognizing the country as a bright spot in the region in terms of both economic development and social equity.

The Vietnamese top legislator highlighted the continuous growth in Vietnam-New Zealand relations over the past five decades. He noted that the recent upgrade of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership marks a historic milestone, opening a new phase of deeper, more strategic, and trust-based cooperation.

He also praised the productive discussions between PM Luxon and Vietnamese leaders and expressed confidence that both sides would closely coordinate to implement high-level agreements and realize the objectives set under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The NA Chairman was glad to see the strong parliamentary cooperation between the two nations, which has contributed significantly to both bilateral and multilateral parliamentary forums. He affirmed that the Vietnamese NA would continue to strongly support the implementation of cooperation programs and agreements between the two countries.

Both leaders agreed to enhance exchanges between high-level delegations, ministries, sectors, localities, and organizations, including parliamentary committees and friendship groups. They also sought to expand cooperation in emerging fields such as climate change response, just energy transition, green economy, and climate-adaptive smart agriculture.

PM Luxon reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to supporting Vietnam in improving the quality of high-value agricultural exports, implementing climate change response projects, and providing English training for Vietnam’s key personnel. He also encouraged stronger linkages between leading New Zealand universities and their Vietnamese counterparts to help develop a highly skilled workforce.

The two sides pledged to continue working hand in hand and supporting each other at regional and international forums. PM Luxon reiterated New Zealand’s strong support for ASEAN’s centrality and expressed hope for the early establishment of an ASEAN-New Zealand Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

On this occasion, Chairman Tran Thanh Man extended his regards and invited Speaker of the New Zealand Parliament Gerry Brownlee to visit Vietnam soon. In response, PM Luxon expressed his desire to welcome Chairman Tran Thanh Man to New Zealand in the near future.
