Vietnam, Laos coordinate on 2026 defence cooperation plan

VOV.VN - General Phan Van Giang, Politburo member, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, and Minister of National Defence of Vietnam, met with Sen. Lieut. Gen Khamliang Outhakaysone, member of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and Minister of National Defence of Laos, in Vientiane on December 2.

During the meeting, General Phan Van Giang extended his warmest congratulations on the 50th National Day of Laos and showed his great joy at the achievements of the LPRP and people over the past five decades under the leadership of the LPRP. He highlighted their unity in overcoming challenges and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development regionally and globally.

General Phan Van Giang expressed confidence that brotherly Laos will continue to achieve new successes in its renewal and nation-building efforts toward peace, independence, democracy, unity, and prosperity along the socialist path. He affirmed that the Party, State, Government, Armed Forces, and people of Vietnam always remember Laos’ steadfast support and assistance in Vietnam’s struggle for independence and national reunification, as well as in current nation-building and defence efforts.

In response, General Khamliang Outhakaysone conveyed his condolences for the recent losses of life and property caused by storms and floods in Vietnam and congratulated the country on tremendous achievements.

He reaffirmed Laos’ thanks for Vietnam’s sincere, loyal support and substantial contributions during the past struggle for liberation and reunification, and in today’s process of renewal, nation-building, defence, and development.

He also expressed sincere appreciation to the Ministry of National Defence of Vietnam for supporting and accompanying Laos in successfully organizing the 50th National Day celebrations.

Based on the 2026 cooperation plan already signed by the two defence ministries, Generals Phan Van Giang and Khamliang Outhakaysone consented to coordinate and guide relevant units to proactively develop and carry out cooperation plans with quality and efficiency.

Initial priorities include preparations for the Party Congresses of both countries, preservation and promotion of revolutionary historical sites, and strengthening of trade and investment connections, particularly in border areas.
