Vietnam calls on international support for humanitarian issues in South Sudan

VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, has expressed his appreciation for the encouraging developments taking place in South Sudan this year, despite the young East African country facing numerous difficulties due to novel coronavirus (COVID-19), floods, and food shortages.

Upon addressing a UN Security Council (UNSC) video teleconference to discuss the situation in South Sudan on December 15 in his role as Chairman of the Sub-Committee of the UN Security Council related to South Sudan (Committee 2206), Ambassador Quy reported to the Security Council on the group’s recent activities. Indeed, a total of five sessions have been organised, with the issuance of 41 documents and approval of seven requests for temporary exemptions for restrictive measures to be placed on a number of individuals and organisations in South Sudan.

The Vietnamese diplomat added that the ceasefire agreement continued to be followed, before urging the local government to take effective measures aimed at addressing violence between communities. He stressed the importance of implementing criteria aimed at reviewing the UNSC’s arms embargo mechanism placed on South Sudan.

Ambassador Quy expressed his great appreciation for the role of the UN’s Peacekeeping Mission (UNMISS), neighbouring countries, and regional organisations in promoting the peace and development process in South Sudan. The diplomat affirmed that the country will continue with its positive contributions to the activities being launched by the UNMISS.

Furthermore, the UNSC also met online to discuss the current situation in South Sudan and the activities of the UNMISS.

UNMISS is a UN peacekeeping mission that was originally established under Resolution 1996 on July 8, 2011, by the UNSC and is renewed annually, with this being done until March 12, 2021, under Resolution 2514.

The Vietnamese side has officially participated in UN peacekeeping operations and previous sent a representative to join UNMISS in 2014. The nation has deployed a level two field hospital in Bentiu, South Sudan, and since 2018 has been preparing for the deployment of the third level two field hospital.

As usual at the UNSC, non-permanent member states will be assigned to assume the chairmanship of affiliated agencies of the Security Council. Currently, the country is holding the role of Chair of Committee 2206 for the 2020 to 2021 term.
