Vietnam becomes leading Brazilian trade partner in ASEAN

VOV.VN - Vietnam has become Brazil’s leading trade partner in ASEAN, with two-way trade exceeding US$3 billion in July, an annual rise of 28%, according to the secretary for Bilateral Negotiations in Asia, the Pacific, and Russia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.

The upcoming 76th National Day of Vietnam on September 2 was celebrated by the Embassy of Vietnam in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia on August 30.

During the course of the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Brazil Pham Thi Kim Hoa hailed the country’s major achievements 35 years on from implementing the “Doi moi” (Renewal) process.

Due to the nation being successful in maintaining political stability, creating a favourable business climate, balancing economic growth, and implementing sustainable development goals, the country has earned the trust of international friends. It has therefore become an attractive destination in Southeast Asia for both investors and foreign tourists.

The country recorded a gross domestic product growth rate of 2.91% last year, with this figure seeing a rise of 5.64% on-year in the first six months of the year, despite facing the impact of COVID-19 outbreaks, she added.

Brazil represents a major Vietnamese partner in Latin America, with each side helping the other in socio-economic development over the years whilst closely uniting at international organisations and multilateral forums.

To mark the foundation of the Vietnam-Brazil comprehensive partnership, exchanges in culture and education have brought people of the two countries closer, the diplomat added.

In response, Marcia Donner Abreu, Secretary for Bilateral Negotiations in Asia, the Pacific, and Russia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil said that the South American nation stands ready to promote and diversify trade ties with the country, citing that both nations have already compared notes on issues of mutual concern. They also identified new fields of co-operation during the seventh political consultation held in November, 2020, along with signing cooperation agreements on maritime transport and aviation services, among other things.

This comes after Vietnam and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) recently discussed future co-operation, she stated.
