Vietnam backs inspections and accountability into IS crimes

VOV.VN - The nation supports the work being carried out by the UN’s investigative team on crimes committed by IS in order to assist national efforts to bring justice to victims throughout Iraq.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, made the statement on May 12 during the UN Security Council Arria-Formula Meeting on harnessing technology to deliver justice for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.

The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed the country’s persistent stance on investigating accountability relating to violations of international humanitarian and human rights laws, adding that collection, management, and transfer of evidence should be made in line with international laws and best practices.

Ambassador Quy believes that the use of technology could serve to make contributions to removing prejudice against individuals who are victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

The meeting itself drew the participation of over 20 members of the UNSC and the UN, with Karim Asad Ahmad Khan, head of the Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD), highlighting the results of investigations into crimes carried out by IS. Most notably, these inspections have been done through the application of advanced technologies, digital platforms, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Evidence shows that IS committed crimes against the Yazidi people who live along the border of Iraq and Syria, including thousands of women and children, he said.

Other participants stressed the serious nature of the crimes done by IS, whilst others spoke highly of the establishment of the UNITAD and the mission’s operations to sharpen focus on the psychology and mental health of survivor.

They also lauded the UNITAD’s application of AI to collect evidence, all of which can be used to bring IS members to trial at national and international courts.

Furthermore, members commended the positive co-operation which has taken place between the UNITAD and the Iraqi authorities, while also requesting that the UN provide support to countries to carry out counter-terrorism efforts.
