Vietnam attends international seminar on East Sea in Moscow

VOV.VN - A delegation of the Vietnam Lawyers Association (VLA) led by Tran Cong Phan, vice president and general secretary of the VLA, attended an international seminar to discuss the East Sea on November 22 in Moscow, Russia.

Co-organised by the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) and the “Way for Peace” International Fund of Russia, the event touched upon several disputes ongoing in the East Sea and the need to boost international co-operation.

In the first part of the event, the seminar provided participants with updates on the latest developments occurring in the East Sea. This includes legal, diplomatic, and on-the-site moves in 2019 to 2021 period, policy adjustments regarding the East Sea by countries both in and outside of the region, as well as relevant events and changes in the international environment.

During the second session, delegates looked into solutions aimed at intensifying trust building and promoting the settlement of disputes in the East Sea on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This is in addition to co-operation mechanisms in and outside the region in a bid to facilitate the settlement and prevent tensions from escalating.

Dr. Lai Thai Binh, deputy director of the East Sea Institute at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam stated that  international co-operation plays a hugely important role in the East Sea issue.

The country continues to pay close attention to persistently settling disputes, particularly those regarding its territorial sovereignty, safeguarding its territorial sovereignty, preserving an environment of peace and development, as well as ensuring political stability and social order, he said.

Dr. Binh emphasized that at the time when major organisations like the UN are taking more heed to the East Sea issue, co-operation, both regionally and multilaterally, is significant to promoting development, stability, and co-operation in the region.
