Vietnam advocates Yemen’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity

VOV.VN - The nation backs Yemeni sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, Chargé d'Affaires of the Vietnamese mission to the UN Ambassador Pham Hai Anh stated during an UNSC online meeting held on January 14 to discuss the ongoing situation in Yemen.

The Vietnamese diplomat also used the platform as a chance to underscore the importance of promoting and ensuring the involvement of women throughout the political process. In addition, Ambassador Anh hailed the positive developments achieved in the implementation of the Riyadh agreement, including the formation of the new Government.

With regard to the importance of immediately halting hostilities and the acceptance of the Joint Declaration towards a nationwide ceasefire, Ambassador Anh outlined the difficulties ahead. Indeed, a combination of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), crippling economic challenges, food insecurity, and the imminent risk of famine represent severe challenges for the Middle Eastern country.

The local diplomat went on to call for an early international donor conference to be held for Yemen, urging all concerned parties to fully implement the Stockholm and Riyadh agreements, together with UN mediation.

Mark Lowcock, under-secretary-general for the UN in Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, said that the highest priority in Yemen  is preventing a massive famine. As such, it is anticipated that 16 million Yemenis will go hungry this year, whilst approximately 50,000 already find themselves in the midst of a small famine, adding that  every decision the world makes right now must take this issue into account.

The speakers also called on the wider international community to increase aid for Yemen, asking relevant parties to resume dialogues in an effort to narrow differences.

They condemned recent attacks in the country, especially the attack on Aden airport which occurred on December 30, 2020, which killed roughly 30 civilians and injured more than 100 others.
