US backs a strong, independent, prosperous Vietnam

VOV.VN - The US has outlined its support for a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam that is capable of playing an increasingly important role throughout the region, thereby contributing to peace, stability, co-operation, and development, both in Asia and globally.

US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien made the statement during his phone talks with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on January 15.

During the course of talks both sides welcomed the flexible organisation of activities that officially mark the anniversary of diplomatic relations, especially in the context of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The pair shared the assessment that bilateral ties are currently witnessing strong development across many fields, thereby agreeing to continue working to boost the stable and intensive development of the joint comprehensive partnership. Indeed, ties will be based on respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political institutions for mutual benefits.

Deputy PM Minh expressed his appreciation for both NSA O’Brien and US Trade Representative (USTR) and Secretary of State Robert Lighthizer for listening to and engaging with the concerns of the business communities of both nations. Indeed, this came during the USTR’s investigation into Vietnamese monetary policy and timber materials under Section 301 of Act 1974.

NSA O’Brien said that various Vietnamese ministries and agencies have co-operated alongside US partners, in addition to working with the USTR during consultations within the framework of the Section 301 investigation.

He also affirmed that active dialogues between the two sides have served to promote the stable development of bilateral trade, thereby benefitting businesses, and the people of the two countries.
