UN official greatly impressed by Vietnamese climate commitments

VOV.VN - Kanni Wignaraja, assistant secretary general of the UN and regional director of UNDP for Asia and the Pacific, expressed her delight at the nation’s strong commitments to climate change response, including energy transition.

At a meeting held with Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on July 28 in Hanoi, Wignaraja hailed the efforts made by the Vietnamese Government in developing a public administration which is both efficient and transparent.

She was highly appreciative of Vietnamese socio-economic achievements, as well as its commitments to multilateral co-operation and its role and contributions to the UN.

Expressing her delight at visiting the country on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of its UN membership, Wignaraja affirmed that the UNDP stands ready to support the nation in its path to achieve green, sustainable, and inclusive socio-economic recovery and development.

For his part, Minister Son lauded the UNDP’s role and contributions globally for causes such as poverty reduction, governance enhancement, and recovery capacity building, thereby moving towards sustainable development goals.

The Minister thanked the UNDP for its support of the nation since reunification, going on to applaud the programme’s valuable assistance to the country in COVID-19 prevention and control, as well as post-pandemic socio-economic recovery.

Regarding co-operation between the two sides moving forward, Minister Son suggested that the UNDP mobilise resources and policy advice in order to effectively and fully implement the Country Programme Document for Vietnam for the 2022 to 2026 period.

He also proposed that the UNDP co-ordinate alongside other UN organisations to implement the Vietnam-UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for the 2022 to 2026 period. This will cover socio-economic recovery, climate change response, the implementation of Vietnamese commitments at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), and the mobilization of resources in support of vulnerable groups during socio-economic recovery and transformation.
