UN hails Vietnam's contributions to peacekeeping operations

VOV.VN - Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, held a meeting on February 2 to bid farewell to Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations of the UN, marking the end of his term.

During the meeting Lacroix expressed his great appreciation for Vietnamese participation and contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, especially its work during the UN's peacekeeping mission in South Sudan, as well as promoting the participation of women in peacekeeping operations.

Lacroix went on to affirm that he personally, along with the Department of Peacekeeping Operation, will continue to work closely alongside the Ministry of Defence in the process of deploying Vietnamese sappers at the UN Interim Security Mission in Abyei.

The UN official stated that he hopes the nation will continue to increase its contributions to UN peacekeeping operations, while also voicing his support for the country in expanding its activities in both missions, types, and fields, in terms of both military and police forces. He therefore expects Vietnam to continue to increase the participation of women, whilst also increasing the participation of officials who speak French, with in the peacekeeping force.

The UN Under Secretary-General also outlined his wish to visit Vietnam as soon as possible in order to work alongside relevant agencies on these issues.

In response, Ambassador Quy underlined the important role of Lacroix in leading UN peacekeeping operations over the years.

The Ambassador thanked the Under-Secretary-General for his support for Vietnamese participation in this field, especially in promoting co-operation in training and experiencing sharing in peacekeeping force deployment.

The Vietnamese diplomat acknowledged Lacroix's opinions and affirmed that the country will make greater efforts to increase its contribution to UN peacekeeping operations in the time ahead.
