Togo, Vietnam elevate bilateral ties ahead of diplomatic milestone

VOV.VN - State President Luong Cuong welcomed Togo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Integration, and Togolese Abroad, Robert Dussey, on January 8, marking the beginning of his three-day official visit to Vietnam.

The State leader emphasized the significance of this visit in fostering the Vietnam-Togo friendship and all-around cooperation, particularly as the two nations approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties (February 8, 1975 – 2025).

President Cuong reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment to enhancing relations with African nations, including Togo. While acknowledging positive developments in bilateral ties over the past five decades, he noted that the current level of cooperation remains modest and has yet to fully harness the huge potential of both nations.

To address this, the President proposed several measures to bolster bilateral ties, including intensifying high-level exchange visits to build political trust and establish a solid foundation for collaboration. He also underscored the importance of stepping up coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums and organizations, such as the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, International Organisation of La Francophonie, and African Union.

The host leader highlighted the need to prioritize economic cooperation, especially in areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, mining, and telecommunications. He encouraged Togo to share information about investment opportunities and offer favorable policies for Vietnamese businesses. Vietnam, he added, is ready to collaborate with Togo on agricultural initiatives, including technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and expert exchanges.

Minister Dussey extended New Year greetings and delivered an invitation from Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé for President Cuong to visit Togo at a mutually convenient time. President Cuong reciprocated the gesture by asking Dussey to convey his regards and an invitation for the Togolese President to visit Vietnam in the future.

Minister Dussey expressed admiration for Vietnam, highlighting shared aspirations for national development, social stability, and improved quality of life. He affirmed that his nation regards Vietnam as a top-priority partner in Asia and expressed a desire to learn from Vietnam’s development experience while deepening bilateral cooperation across various field.

During his visit, the Togolese minister aims to advance collaboration in the fields of economy, trade, agriculture, and seaport development. He pledged to work closely with Vietnamese ministries and agencies to enhance joint efforts in the coming period.
