VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has emphasised that the response to climate change requires a global approach, with stronger international solidarity, greater multilateralism, and the UN playing a central role in the process.

At the invitation of Antonio Guterres, secretary-general of the UN, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent an important message to the informal Leaders' Roundtable on Climate Change in New York, co-chaired by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Egyptian President on September 22.

The event is part of an initiative by Guterres to unify awareness and promote strong political commitments on climate finance, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and energy transition. This is ahead of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change – COP27 which is set to take place next November in Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt.

With this important purpose, heads of state and heads of governments were invited along with leaders of major international organisations to participate in the session.

As part of his message at the session, PM Chinh emphasized that the response to climate change requires a global approach, with stronger international solidarity and the UN playing a central role being key.

It also remains necessary to have a people-focused approach as citizens are always the motivation of development, especially as it is essential to ensure fairness and justice in each country, he said.

The PM went on to outline that although being a developing country in transition, Vietnam has always been a responsible member of the UN and remains determined and proactive in implementing its international commitments with the highest of responsibility.

The Government chief went on to ask development partners to strongly support the country in terms of technology transfer, financial incentives, training of high-quality human resources, and to actively exchange and share experience to improve administration and management.

This will greatly help the country both achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, effectively responding to climate change, while simultaneously ensuring energy security, sustainable socio-economic development, and solving problems related social security issues and improving people's spiritual and material life.

As part of the occasion, PM Chinh expressed his gratitude to international friends and partners, UN agencies, and Guterres for their co-operation and support in the country’s response to climate change, including accelerating the negotiation process to establish a just energy transition partnership.

Speaking at the session, Guterres emphasised the need for technology transfer, financial mobilisation, and capacity building to support developing countries to fulfill their international commitments on climate change, in particular the obligations under the Framework Convention and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

The UN chief said that it remains necessary to boost co-operation between developed and developing countries and reinforce international solidarity to quickly find a solution to the current climate crisis.
