PM departs for special ASEAN-US summit, US and UN visit
VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation left Hanoi on the evening of May 10 to attend a special ASEAN-US summit marking the 45th anniversary of the relations between the two sides in Washington D.C on May 12-13.
The visit is being made following an invitation made by US President Joe Biden.
On this occasion, PM Chinh and his delegation will visit the US and the United Nations from May 11 to 17.
This is the Vietnamese Government chief's first overseas trip in the context that Vietnam has contained the COVID-19 pandemic nationwide, resumed a broad range of activities, implemented a progamme on rapid recovery and sustainable socio-economic development, while boosting international integration in a comprehensive, substantive and effective manner.
This visit aims to carry out Vietnam's foreign policy, the country's position and responsibility in ASEAN, while upholding the regional group's centrality, promoting ASEAN's cooperation with the US, an important partner of ASEAN.
The meeting will discuss a host of important and urgent issues amid the world facing plenty of difficulties and obstacles in its efforts to get out of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the unstable fluctuations triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Talking points will focus on recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, global public health, climate change response, widespread growth promotion, maritime security, and human resource development. This is addition to strengthening people-to-people cooperation, sharing views and visions on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Notably, it will outline strategic directions for the continued development of ASEAN-US relations for the benefit of people, peace, and prosperity, thereby creating a foundational step forward in the ASEAN-US strategic partnership.
